Not on a tree. Half a dozen spotted lantern flies in late nymph stage taking shady break before causing devastation in Connecticut.

Finally found out what they are - Manduca rustica rustica - Rustic sphinx.

I just assumed it was a tomato horn worm. I didn’t realize there was variation within a large related family.
