I just assumed it was a tomato horn worm. I didn’t realize there was variation within a large related family.

Even though it was about to munch on the last leaf of one of the two potted Virginia Creepers it had stripped bare, I almost felt sorry for this poor thing. I thought about squishing it underfoot and saving it from a terrible fate but, I didn’t want to lose all of the potential garden helpers that it was hosting.

I’ve had two waves of these hit my pines this summer (not to mention the attacks by Nantucket pine tip moth caterpillars). I really have to consider using pesticides on my trees.
