The heather is not quite in full bloom in this mixed planting, but it's getting there. All UK native plants.

I just saw your Flickr page, and I was blown away. You have the most incredible accent plantings! Could you give me some advice on suitable species for accent plantings? Also, are you able to keep your plants small, or do you just switch them out?

Thanks!
Growing in pots does usually keep the plants smaller than usual, but they are continually changing. For comparison there are photos earlier in the thread of what this one looked like when it was first put together https://www.bonsainut.com/threads/the-accent-companion-plant-thread.20282/page-10#post-489100 , and attached here is a picture from when it was shown last October.

As to suitable species - my first choice would always be to use what's growing around you in your garden and your reference landscapes. There are a few thoughts on it in this article http://suttonbonsai.co.uk/index.php/bonsai/bonsai-presentation/accent-plantings I wrote for our club website.

Very interesting! I have one more question: how do you get the mushrooms to grow in your plantings?

The ones in these pictures were just picked and put there for display purposes. I'm also trying some with pieces of wood that have the fungi growing in them.

Oh, cool! I was all excited thinking about growing these epic mushroom accent plantings, but that may not be super easy...

Not super easy, but feasible I think. This little Sulphur Tuft came up too late in the year to amount to much (yes that is ice on the pot), but shows it can be done. I'm hoping to see the fruiting body again later in the year. The fungus is growing in a piece of wood buried in the pot.

I have shrooms growing in my prunus spring to autumn. They pop up once every number of weeks. It must be the wood rotting underneath the soil surface. I hope there's some mycelium that can be harvested next spring :)
