What’s your latest Bonsai related purchase?

I got a couple trees in some sweet tin cans. Let us know how they work.
My issue is going to be not to let it cook too long during the summer heat, lol

I’m debating a shoddy Quikcrete pot around it to insulate or hole saw a few lightning holes and line the inside with mesh

I got a bread loaf tin already to use too that’s a little deeper

I picked up a dwarf pomegranate at lowes today and I have a “orange flame” and “mikawa yatsubusa” Maples arriving from mr maple tomorrow.
Nurseries, big box stores here have never even heard of dwarf pomegranates:(

Would you like one? I don’t mind sending you one if you want one. If you can wait till next spring this one has two separate trees that I’m going to separate. You can have the other one if they make it that long 😂

Bought 3 pots from Bonsai Vision.

Won 2 pots in the silent auctions at MABS.

Bought a larch, a small shimpku and a red chojubai at MABS

Keep meaning to take and post pics but alas the schedule and other stuff going on 😬

That's very nice of you, but I do have a couple. Just saying they don't sell them around here. But thanks so much for the kind offer.

Not a problem, us 83 babies gotta look out for each other 😁. Do you have any threads on your poms?

If you're going to make a cement pot, just put the tree in that.
I'd hole drill the bottom for drainage like normal, then a 1/8" to put a few holes in each side, and then just spray paint it white or silver to reflect heat.
How well that works depends on the material. Dollar store pans, I suspect cheap steel or aluminum, so the paint should hold to it decently.
The tin cans work out because the metal is reflective. I also have a few dark colored plastic coffee cans, and I figure these can't be any worse than the black nursery pots.

I have a whole bunch of various plastic food dishes to use as molds, lol. Just no time to experiment

I’ll have to check them with a magnet, but I expect steel

Target had a nice loaf pan that was a brown color. But it was $8. MAYBE I’ll put money into pricier pans if the cheapos actually work and don’t cook the roots

But you do have a point about the black nursery pots…

Could make a sand mold for the insides and mix the concrete so its a little thick and slather on the sides to the desired thickness and add the bottom. Smooth everything out and pop some drainage holes and tie holes while its wet. Let dry and then take out the sand

If you try painting it, anything with a nonstick coating may not work. The paint might not adhere to the surface.

Building off @Kullas thought you might do well using the pans as part of the moulding process for cement pots.

Got this today. Anyone like this brand?

Went to a normal non-bonsai nursery with a friend who was part of starting a bonsai nursery back in the day

Great time walking around, checking out trees, thinking about what might work and what might not, and why. There’s a larger tree that I left that I may still go back to get and chop, a species I hadn’t heard of, and haven’t seen much of, but is apparently a classic. Nice small red leaves.

I got an elm with some interesting stuff going on, will likely cut it back late May-ish and start the process of making a smaller tree.

He’s making me want to play with non-akadama-based soil, too. It’s been a great baseline to learn from but lots of folks have cheaper solutions that work very well… I feel like akadama/pumice/lava has been great to help me avoid overwatering though, so we’ll see. Settling in to the journey as the destination mentality.

Lantana in a Chuck Iker pot from @Zach Smith. I have been eyeing this tree on his website for awhile, waiting for the weather to warm up to buy it. Then it disappeared from his for sale page. Luckily, he had taken it down to repot it into a bigger pot, which I love. He was going to raise the price on his website because of said new pot, but class act guy that he is, he let me have it for the original price. new lantana.jpg

So here it is, one of these variegated Desert Rose will be in my possession next week. This is what I sacrificed my prunus order for because I have wanted a variegated Adenium for quite a while now and they are ridiculously hard to find in Europe.
Seller has had them in stock since Wednesday but with Easter in the way shipping is understandably pushed to next week, I’m so excited 🤣🤣🤣. He also has some variegated Plumeria which is also on my radar.

Here she is at last! I realize the picture makes it look tiny, it’s not. Can’t close my hand around that caudex, of course it’s repotted out of that dirt now.
