With spring in the air...and count down begins. What are your plans?

Yeah since mine is a dream, it's a big one:). Not to mention that my yard is extremely steep, heavily wooded, and what goes for soil here is so hard you would need heavy machinery to dig anything deeper then 6 inches...far from ideal on many levels. Due to the pitch of the land, the pond itself would definitely require a concrete berm of some sort...beyond my capabilities. Yours sounds nice.

Steep would allow for a more natural looking waterfall.

Depends on a lot of factors but everything is possible at some given time. Bonsai is time and all that goes along. In another thread I read "two words' and none of them were "Wabi-sabi"... look it up and enjoy.

Well a steep setting allows you to move dirt and place it so you don't get a mound of rocks on a flat surface. Is what I meant. From our back lawn...our waterfall seems like part of our hardscape. But from another angle you see a waterfall. You drive by some and you a well manicured lawn...with a pile of rock making a waterfall.

For me, I've been busy lately. I bought a few stock trees as well as some seedlings, and collected a few trees as well. For the most part, this is going to be a growing year. I am trying to document everything that I do so that I will know in the future what techniques work best here. And some of the things I'm doing are just for fun :P My main obstacle, believe it or not, will be making sure everything stays watered as I will be away from all of the trees that are in the ground as well as most of the potted ones while I'm in school. June through the end of August I will be around, but the first couple months of summer I am not sure what I'll do.

Need to add "shovel snow" had 2 more inches last night :mad::mad:

Oh no...you got more snow. I had two people tell me yesterday we were to get some, but seen nothing in our forecast. And no white stuff in the ground...I must say...I am ready to welcome spring earlier...than this Friday!

Well, St Patrick's day is my unofficial date to pull trees from the winter storage "lot". Only today it is still snowing---check that: it appears to have finally stopped leaving yet another 8 to 10 inches. It was over 60F Saturday, and is supposed to climb to mid 50s this weekend again. I'll be retired before this batch of trees pushes buds at this rate.
I like the sound of drinks on the deck. Except the deck is covered in snow.

HONEST I feel bad for you. Ours was all gone except for a few banks along the road and robins were actually finding worms Saturday here. When I woke up this morning and came in from shoveling and cleaning vehicles my Wife do not even say good morning until I spoke as she knew inside I was furious.

REPOTTING 30 Trees, Sifting, Mixing Dirt, Working Root, Prepping branches for season ahead. Also going collecting for the next two weeks...Busy time of the year.

BTW, I've long enough to realize that it is great to have plans...but real LIFE is what happens while you are busy planning. :p

A little bit of spring for you guys still buried in snow!

Went out Tuesday and counted my trees. Turns out I have 80 "plans"! Which one do you want to know about? haha!

I've a bunch of trees to collect as soon as the ground thaws. Tamaracks , American Elms, Hawthorns and Ironwood( American Hornbeam) probably 10 to 20 of each. Hitting nurseries looking for trees I won't be able to find growing around here like junipers.

There are three varieties of Juniper that grow in this state. Common Juniper Virginia Red Cedar and Juniperus Horizontalis. Having said that I only know of collected examples of the Red Cedar. Common Juniper is pretty rare and Horzontalis is difficult to locate.

Go outside and inventory my loses. Then go from there. This has been a particularly bad winter.

We've seen the high 70's here 4 times now, and its projected to dip into the 20's again next week. Today spider mites, tomorrow......snow. repeat repeatedly

I am currently traveling but as soon as I get back home on Sunday I will need to start repotting at least a few maples. This is a tough time since so many need attention and the window is pretty small. Also I intend to do some root grafting at the same time.

the window is longer here this year, but as usual will slam on my fingers....
