Hi,

Nice little tree, congratulations.

IMO It is Ulmus parvifolia var. nire-keyaki. You have an article here click, click (Sorry it is in Spanish, but photos are quite good)

I purchase one some time ago
laos3.jpg

I let it grow (no cork bark in new growth)

and I made an airlayer

Well, in fact, I did five airlayers

And after one year growing by its own

I hope corky bark will appear sooner or later, but I am quite sure that one day will appear.

Again, congratulations for your new tree, and good luck with the cuttings

Greetings form Spain.
Thanks for ID indeed...we have dealth with it many times here not coming to consensus. Nice trees BTW.

Your Chinese elm is developping well.

I've got one that a Belgian friend gave me as a 2 mm cutting some years ago. He called it "Zelkova Nire", too, ha ha ha!...

I will post photos soon...

@defra I'm not sure, but I don't think that it be the same cultivar. Maybe an english elm, regarding the bark pattern. Any chance of a photo detail of the bark?, and, even more important, how big it is?, IMHO, is medium to big size, quite biggert that yours.

I'm thinking Ulmus parvifolia 'Corticosa' (Cork Bark Chinese Elm).
Definately not a Zelkova.

This is a Zelkova Nire.

This is a Zelkova Nire.

Once again, there is no such thing as a 'Zelkova nire" :p

From a (long) thread on IBC:

"What you have is cork bark Chinese elm, Ulmus parvifolia 'Cork Bark.' This is the registered cultivar name. You sometimes see it labeled "corticosa" or "suberosa," but those are invalid synonyms. With any mutation, different specimens may exhibit various expressions of the gene. It is still unmistakably 'Cork Bark.'
Forget "Nire." It just means elm."
