New bonsai help

Should I continue in the "kengai" fashion (cascading) or the "han-kengai" (semi cascading)?

More accurately....

This is more play it by ear....
Except nose, mouth, sight, feel, and that 6th sense, apparently only @Potawatomi13 is keen on!

To say....
Your juniper may grow mad roots!
Or it may die!

We can not tell!

By the way my bonsai is not a " mallsai" as you think it is, it was purchased from a nursery not a vendor. What makes you think it's such a lost cause? I'm curious as why you think it's in such horrible shape.

Well it's not the 'where it was purchased from' that makes it a mallsai, it's the style. Your typical mallsai Juniper is this exact shape. If you like it, that's all that counts. You just don't see many, or any, show trees that look like this.

lost cause

Yours actually looks quite healthy.....

Rant!
For real though....I was at the depot yesterday.....and they had grey ones.!
Grey dead....not grey dormant!

You could blow on them and they fall apart.

I bought one once looked alive, dead.
Sometimes they even spray em green.
And I found the stuff they do it with at Ace Hardware the other day!

End rant.

But yours truly looks pretty good....
However, winter repotting and inside is a mission for danger kitty. Not Mission Impossible. But danger kitty is by no means Tom Cruise! Or a Vampire!

Hey guys! So first time bonsai guy here looking for some tips on care for my Japanese juniper bonsai. I was given a bonsai starter it for christmas year and Im super excited. So I repotted it when I first got it on christmas then again just today because there was a large amount of roots showing right below the trunk.

:eek:o_O that's pretty adventurous!! the hardest part for me the first few years was trimming the roots at repotting time, I was so scared of killing the plant that I would rather skip repotting for another year. I've gotten over that hurdle though but I still get sleepless nights where I think "dude you killed that tree by cutting that thick root off" and I don't sleep until i see signs of life again.

that said i wish you luck! I wouldn't touch that nana until it shows strong healthy growth again. listen to sorce and Leo, get the perfect siting and give the tree some TLC, I hope it survives for you. last thought: junipers only show they have died after a few weeks so say after a month if the tree still has a healthy color it will be ok if you don't go ape on it again

I thought of doing that however, it's hard to see in the pictures, but there is a massive bend right above my trunk about 2-3" that I feel would harm the tree if I try to wire it to vigorously which may be needed to get the informal upright. A little mental picture painting for you... If you were to have roads intersecting at an X formation with a third road running vertically through the X in the middle, take a second and visualize... My trunk is angled roughly the same angle as lower right angle created by the lower right X leg and the vertical leg. Does that make sense? If you have any suggestions on how to transform that to informal upright let me know lol.
Sure do. I repot with a slight angle change to stand it up some. Then shove a stake in the bucket right at the base of the trunk. It won't hurt it. Poke it down in until it bottoms out. Tie it to the stake under the bend then pull the trunk up as straight as you can. Tie it to the stake above the bend. Let grow. These want to grow sideways so next spring bend it up again.
I did a few that looked like yours 3 years ago. Maybe 4. This is one here last summer. You can see the stake at the top. Not the best picture but it's the only one I have. 2015-08-16 16.26.25.jpg

First off do not worry about working on it anymore for at least a full year concentrating on keeping it alive and acclimating it to the outdoors. Also I must point out that many people including myself do not remove the plant from its soil for up to several years. It allows you to do styling and wiring yearly and they grow just fine. There could be a nice semi-cascade down the road but not if it is dead...
My Wife has killed so many Junipers in the past she requested I do not purchase her anymore - they all died because she man-handled to hell out of them and expected them to act like a Tropical... Some never lasted over a month.
Since then I have taken a keen interest in Junipers and have several here at the house and more varieties growing down south, 5 varieties there and a total of 28. Mine are doing fine up North but I sent the others to a grower down there for a few reasons one being they were grown south of me and shipped to late to acclimate properly. If anything you now have learned what "not" to do and my advise is that if it dies use what you learned on more ;)

and then should i be watering it a little more frequently now that it is getting more light? ive been watering it about once every four days but misting i almost everyday, growth and soil.

i also am going to be starting a new forum regarding jade bonsai, i have a plant that ive been growing that ive decided to turn into another bonsai, so if you have any suggestions look it up :)

so i decided that i only have like one or two questions regarding the jade because its young, not ready for any styling. but how do i promote trunk thickening?

Try like f@#kin 200 I have so many of the damn things they almost live off of the humidity in the greenhouse, they get water like once a month, some of the cuttings will go much longer (won't say how long, I forget how long it usually is until I remember them).

Oh and as far as trunk thickening, with jade there is no trick just growth, if its in a good size pot and already has a strong root system don't follow what people say about watering when dry, with the right soil jades can be watered daily like any other Bonsai in the summer and they grow like crazy in full sun. Like I said above I neglect most of mine but I have a few that I care quite a bit more about then others so they get treated better, nevertheless all of my jades are happy.

Thanks Bro!

@MAbro515 And other new folks......

This is when you gotta click on his profile....
And note his location. Note the greenhouse, and adjust accordingly!

My guess...with the right soil for your situation up there, humid right?

You might be able to work with a soil that can catch the morning dew.....
they almost live off of the humidity in the greenhouse

And never water them!

That's Probly a stretch.....but you'll figure it out! They are surely gonna need a loose, dry, soil. They'll Probly rot in anything else.

Jades that get water rarely are in a regular cactus mix the few I water daily in summer are in straight pumice.
