I'm always up for a contest. Entered every one since joining here. Thinking Tropical this time since it's ending mid-winter. I swore no more tropicals but always room for a little one:)

Ends mid winter...am I figuring wrong? Three months to get tree. Puts us into end of summer heading into fall. A year from then in pot...is still end of summer. Then one more year...would still be end of summer...no? I am considering it starts when the ending of the tree collection/acquisition is up. And then from year to year at that ending date.

Lol we didnt start yet but nice tree tough

Any other ideas about how this contest could work or what has to be a part of the contest ?
I think that is fare...material that you haven not actually worked. That has not had wire on it or a direction yet set for it.

Congrats @M.Frary for keeping his tree on the right path to a successful lil' Mame tree.

Looks like Feb. 20-02-2020?

How does the contest work?:

The contest is made out of three parts:

Part one:
the search for material.
3 months
(20-05-2017 -- 20-08-2017)

Part two:

prepare it and get it in the mame sized pot.
1 year and 3 months
(20-08-2017 -- 20-11-2018)

Part three:

keep it alive and devellop the mame tree.
2 year and 3 months
(20-11-2018 -- 20-02-2020)

Total Contest length:

3 years and 9 month's
Start: 20-05-2017
End : 20-02-2020

Well...for trees that are dormant in the north...that sort of sucks. Oh, well...guess it will be silhouette shot then. Best hope my game plan is to create ramification then. Still a great excuse to add material that I pondered then talked myself out of...I guess I assumed it would allow dormant trees to wake up. So figured end of Summer with the date of the final tree being purchased the start of the final parts. I'm not disappointed...just gives me an ideal to shoot for style without foliage. Which can still be pretty cool.

After the three months you have one year and three months to get it in the pot..

(20-08-2017 -- 20-11-2018) so it has to be in the pot at 20-11-2018

Its a part of your search to consider if the material you score will be up for the potting in the given time...

And yes end of contest will be in winter so there is a visual on the branch structures if decideous if everyone wants to have the end with leaves we can always extend the contest

When I was talking Dates...
I was talking 1yr And 3 Months later, like. From "today".
So I'm not taking credit for this schedule.

But I like these times Better.

Allows time for any tree to Be potted in either hemisphere.

Mugo, Tropicals, Ds.

Then in the end we get To see green needles, Bare naked, and tropical leaves!

Sounds fun!

I Got a Barberry, maybe a box, maybe an airlayer.

I hope we get a lots of entries.

I like you allow for all species to be reported in a healthy onset for their climate. Was thinking fall color...or early spring with spring foliage emerging. But silhouette is fine with me. Will mean focus on a pot choice needs to be stepped up...presentation a key. Hiding no ugly flaws under foliage. For those deciduous trees. Which is fine by me. 20-11-2018 most likely will have a dormant tree as well. Wish we could have a photo update for deciduous just for viewing in leaf. But, we can share elsewhere so no real hiccup there for me.

Got the pot. Just need a tree. Picked up this 4.25 inch Linda Ippel pot today at the Midwest Bonsai Society Spring show today at the Chicago Botanic Gardens. I am thinking a Seiju elm air layer for my entry.

@M. Frary love the Burly Mame!
These trees are 2 years old from seeds I took from an adult elm I was trimming.
That one is about an inch in diameter just above the soil.
It's just got it's second chop and a good example of chop and grow technique. No wire yet. Maybe never if it behaves good like it is. Also I don't use wound sealer on elms. Well, anything but these trees heal over like gangbusters.
