The "NOT SHOHIN" maple forest

I imagine I'm on your ignore list, but how is this planting looking here in mid-spring?

<shower-thoughts>I find it a bit sad that we've hit a point as a community where everyone has each other on an ignore list. I get why it's there, and I get why some people do it, but I can't help but wonder if we're worse off as a community because of it somehow?</shower-thoughts>

Looking great Lance but like a big blob of leaves at the moment! Need to get in there and remove wire. I am letting it all grow unchecked for the time being because I want the smaller trees to root well and gain vigor. Now in June I will plan to start cutting back and start to finese and build structure.

Not sure if the "ignore" comment is a joke? If not, not sure where is it coming from? I don't and have never had anyone on ignore. I am not sure I even know how to use that feature! Most certainly if I did use it, sorry Lance but you'd not make the cut!

I assume everyone has me on ignore!!!! I'm a "fringy-type" that most people would find annoying. But, growing trees and shrubs in containers is a lifestyle for me, far beyond a hobby. Hopefully you have not taken any of my lunacy as a sign that I don't take this seriously, I'm a happy-go-lucky guy, so some things might not translate.

I smile all day, everyday, and crack one liners in my sleep....this won't change.

Maybe my birthday wishes to you gave you pause.....another party clued me in on the date, I'm no stalker. Your response gave ME pause. Like I said, I'm an acquired taste!!
I've tremendous respect for your horticultural virtuosity...and you certainly are one of the most gracious individuals to grace this forum.:)

All my maples are leaf blobs, up here you get the one shot to cut. Multiple flushes on a JM are a fantasy for me. Burst in the spring, a much weaker second flush around the end of August. I have to grow un-pruned as long as possible or that second flush will be useless, too weak to survive the winters up here.:(:mad::D:D:D:D

Let's see that blob, holmes!!!:cool::D:D:D:D:D:D

Hey! I've got your number bro! I know where you're coming from and I accept you just the way you are. Don't ever change! And I do know that you are a very serious dude with great insights when it comes to this thing we call bonsai. Not sure who don't like you but I do! Please don't let my earlier response give you pause. It was well-meaning with no malice and your B-Day clip was clever and funny! Now, where is that fist pump emoji I need?? :p

It's been a while. Here is an update. Forest has grown well as expected although one of the thicker trees positioned towards the back completely died in the first year. The tree was in bad shape when it was shipped to me so I was not too surprised. I any case I may replace it this spring with another one of similar thickness. This forest has just gone through further revisions and I have edited out some of the trees as you will see below.

Circled in red the tree that died.

June 2018

January 2019. As it looked before thinning and cleaning the forest.

After the work. Several of the thinner trees were taken out from the original planting to open it up and refine the overall composition. Perhaps more in the future. It will be a few more years before this piece shows substantive development.

Always a pleasure Sergio! I find it more calm, with less trees more serene. The other overwhelmed me. As I could not invission when all those little trees matured. But, I am not as acclaimed as you. So, I never doubted it one bit. Was the large amount planted allowing for possible dying of trees ratio? Since you lost the one.

Always a pleasure to read your threads and watch the progress through the fantastic photography... this one is no exception! Really like the thinned out version, love the pot, love the planting angle they all follow, love your vision... love it!

Thanks Darlene. In part large numbers were planted to anticipate possible dieback. But mostly it was to set a vision down of what I had in mind and work from there. Get a feel for the forest as it grows and responds to your initial idea. The game of subtraction in bonsai is more easily played that adding. There will be most likely further edits in the future as the trees mature.

Thanks @Ryceman3, I appreciate it!
