Don't get me wrong..... I love watching newbs do bonsai vids. It's good for the hobby. As a newbie myself, his were the first videos I watched. I thought he was a bonsai GOD!!!
He’s a hack. Granted, it’s a huge nursery, and he’s got to maintain a zillion trees, so he takes shortcuts. As a newbie myself, his were the first videos I watched. I thought he was a bonsai GOD!!!
Yeah....be bold when you actually need to be.....Peter Chen: "don't be afraid...Be BOLD, make big cuts!"
Me: *Butchers all the trees*
I’m sure you include me in this train of thought.
So, you think it’s better to flail away in your own garden, trying this and that, maybe getting lucky and stumbling upon something that works, but usually not. Rather than taking classes, learning techniques that are proven to provide successful results?
All is fair in love and war?Did you just.......call ......me......an 'import' Korean?
He’s a hack. Granted, it’s a huge nursery, and he’s got to maintain a zillion trees, so he takes shortcuts.
The bad thing is he PROMOTES those shortcuts as proper technique. It’s one thing to say he does shortcuts on rough stock, but once a tree goes into serious training, he changes to use a more refined technique. But he doesn’t. And he shows some pretty nice material that he says he keeps the same way. It could be spectacular, if he applied good technique.
Lol I don't mind. I am so Korean now that Koreans say I make them look white. All is fair in love and war?
I thought youd take it as a badge of honour?
Are you talking about the Peter Chen that wrote this in the 1990 ies? Because that does not sound like a newbie..?

True. I did not mean to imply that time spent means you get better per se. But someone doing bonsai for 30 years .. is experienced and not a newb, just not as talented perhaps? If I build a house poorly for many years and continue doing so until I get old.......
Does it make me a professional builder?
If I build a house poorly and write a book advocating my techniques does it make me a professional builder?
My house has really become my own judge.
Wrong techniques....True. I did not mean to imply that time spent means you get better per se. But someone doing bonsai for 30 years .. is experienced and not a newb, just not as talented perhaps?
Now hm.. why would that be..
I am not sure I would recommend user stats as a recommendation for highly regarded. Some people on this site who I feel really show great skill and very good examples of how get certain goals are not in the top posters, to mind come e.g. @markyscott or @MACH5 or walter pall. Others who posts and do not really show convincing trees do make these lists by sheer volume or disputable posts.
I could imagine an alternative explanation. E.g., they do not feel like entering pissing competitions with every noob on the planet who thinks every opinion is equally valuable?
Ah, yarp. One thing I’ve noticed, mind you, is that a lot of the contradictions depend on where people are based, as well as who has been taught by whom or how long their.... experience is, for example. Still, as frustrating as it is, at least we have plenty of information available to pick the bones out of. A step by step guide is good but doesn’t always teach you anything.I just hate contradictory information, and it is everywhere.
True but some info is just plain wrong too.Ah, yarp. The problem I have is with people who speak in absolutes. A good example is the recent thread about the pine that was slip-potted. Someone came on that thread and told the guy the tree was going to drown because of what he did. No grey area, no "you could drown it if you're not careful of watering", just "it's going to drown". Very few things in life are that absolute (death and taxes, though lots of people manage to not pay taxesTrue but some info is just plain wrong too.
Yeah, I was more referring to horticulturally unsound practices. The problem I have is with people who speak in absolutes. A good example is the recent thread about the pine that was slip-potted. This is pretty much how i feel too, for what its worth. That goes for both sides. The other side being, It has worked for me so its the only way.The problem I have is with people who speak in absolutes. A good example is the recent thread about the pine that was slip-potted.
