Is the thin-gauge copper wire at the base to hold the bark in place?
Very nice material and should only improve behind your measured hand......

Will this remain at Boon's for the time being? I might assume your there?

I do love that smell of a nursery-type mix prior to that first proper re-pot!!😋😏

It‘s aluminum and just there to protect the bark. I’ll leave it at Boon’s for now. The smell is great, but one can always be always sure that the roots are doing to be a mess.

Out of reach? Are you walking or taking the bus? That's a day trip. Many people don't have that type of access to a decent bonsai nursery.
Lol, 6 hrs total commute just seems quite long to be behind the wheel. But I definitely will call them to see what they have first to see if it's worth the trip, or if shipping is an option.

On related note, how big will this finished elm be Mr. @markyscott ? I love corker type trees when they're larger to showcase the barks 🤗

Don’t want to hijack this thread but I’m curious. Was that @grouper52 tree? Start a thread eventually?
Yes it was Grouper52 tree, I bought the last 6 of his trees couple weeks ago. All of his trees are amazing!!! I’ll prolly start a thread once the foliage are all out in the spring.

In fact there are some cultivars of ulmus parvifolia that have corky bark too.

- Ulmus parvifolia var hokkaido.
- Ulmus parvifolia var seiju.
- Ulmus parvifolia var yatsubsa.
- Ulmus parvifolia var nirekeyaki.

But the main variety Ulmus parvifolia (chinese elm) is not corky, it has lace bark.

@markyscott Great tree, thanks for sharing.

This is exactly what I was looking for!! Thanks!! Still the other varieties are hard to find. Anyone have a good nursery to get a decent cork bark elm that ships to the midwest??
