2017 From Seed.

@Cattwooduk these are all naturally stratified. I plucked them from leaf duff underneath a full grown Japanese Maple landscape tree. This winter was a bit brutal, so they definitely had a proper cold stratification down below freezing for about 3 weeks.

They started germinating once the temperatures here were above 42° F

Ah ok thanks! I'm pretty sure I did the cold stratification correctly with mine as I had some sprout, so I guess I must have a lot of dud seeds and others that need another cycle before they might germinate.

I've order red finger lime seeds, they should be here in a week or so and will get planted as soon as they arrive. Only getting 6 seeds, hopefully they all germinate.

I also had some crab apple seeds I swiped from the neighbors plant. I have no idea what kind it is but it grows more in a bush then a tree and have super deep red fruit that look like cherries. The flowers are large and white, its a very pretty plant. I meant to get them in the fridge a couple months ago but just kept forgetting, finally got them potted up a couple days ago. Plan to leave them in the cold until its starts to get warm outside. I planted a ton of them so I'm pretty confident I should get at least a few starts.

I got a crab seed to grow pretty good.

It was a quick story though!

They call em fast and that rings in my head when thinking about more!

Nice!

@source did you chill your crab seeds first? I'm really impatient to get them going, hate the chilling process. Really stupid of me not to get them in the fridge 2 months ago. I'm thinking about starting some rowan too but will try airlayers first.

I think they came from an old fruit in the spring...straight planted.

The rotting fruit is supposed to help germination, and it should have had enough chill all winter.

I'd grab up any old fruit on the ground and plant em!

That sounds like a plan. Gramma has a crab with super dark flowers and purplish leaves, I'll grab some fruit off it when I go visit in a couple days. If I get seedlings, do you want one when I send your other crab? You might get some surprise seedling too, never know what I'll find growing and I might as well toss extra whatever in the box.

I moved the Japanese maple outside today to start hardening them off and readying them for UV exposure. The first true leaves are coming in.

have a bunch of ginko seeds I collected last year. this thread is giving me more ideas though. I've always wanted a crabapple...
Watch your Gingko seeds, slugs and snails love these guys. I grew a bunch a number of years ago and no matter what I did they wiped me out.

You should go straight to EP and see what they got in DE bigger.
Reno, NV!

My guess is there is a bigger particle size of DE from there.

@GailC ! Sounds like a plan!
I'll try to get you something else too!

That Airlayer has one bud moving, so It'll make it thru winter and root by midsummer, looking like fall Will be a good ship time!

Awesome!
