Looks like there'll be Zelkovas this year
- Zelkova serrata
- Red Japanese Maple
- Japanese White Pine
- ...seems like there's something else I'm forgetting.
@Cattwooduk these are all naturally stratified. I plucked them from leaf duff underneath a full grown Japanese Maple landscape tree. This winter was a bit brutal, so they definitely had a proper cold stratification down below freezing for about 3 weeks.
They started germinating once the temperatures here were above 42° F
I've order red finger lime seeds, they should be here in a week or so and will get planted as soon as they arrive. Only getting 6 seeds, hopefully they all germinate.
I also had some crab apple seeds I swiped from the neighbors plant. I have no idea what kind it is but it grows more in a bush then a tree and have super deep red fruit that look like cherries. The flowers are large and white, its a very pretty plant. I meant to get them in the fridge a couple months ago but just kept forgetting, finally got them potted up a couple days ago. Plan to leave them in the cold until its starts to get warm outside. I planted a ton of them so I'm pretty confident I should get at least a few starts.
@source did you chill your crab seeds first? I'm really impatient to get them going, hate the chilling process. Really stupid of me not to get them in the fridge 2 months ago. I'm thinking about starting some rowan too but will try airlayers first.
I'd grab up any old fruit on the ground and plant em!
Watch your Gingko seeds, slugs and snails love these guys. I grew a bunch a number of years ago and no matter what I did they wiped me out.have a bunch of ginko seeds I collected last year. this thread is giving me more ideas though. I've always wanted a crabapple...

It's great stuff. Durable. Holds water decently. Keeps bugs away. I just wish the particle size was a tad larger.Which as luck would have it is handled with diatomaceous earth.![]()
I saw that and forgot all about it.I'm trying out a product I found discussed here called optisorb. It's about 30% bigger.
