2017 From Seed.

lol, you guys crack me up. You know I'm terrible at labeling, that could be anything. Probably an obscure Australian native, or something.

Certainly not a fast flowering hybrid that will be ready in as little as 8 weeks.;)

I have crab apple growing nicely

still waiting for : fagus, japanese maple , sakura, trident maple, larch, juniperus chinensis to show sign of life :)

These are from seeds collected in 2015, so they're in their 2nd year. I just sowed them without tags, anyways cultivars are never, or exceptionally true to the mother-plant:

I thought the third one was dead, but maybe it's one that leafs out late. But another seed germinated, a dissectum! Dissectums are usually very weak on their own roots, but we'll see:

The JBP seem to have like a 98% germination rate. I have many more that I need to plant soon that have begun to sprout in a cup of water.

More JBP sprouting and a few redleaf japanese maples are finally coming up.

These trident maples didn't take long to sprout and grew fast but not many of the seeds germinated. I'm giving the rest of them a chance though, maybe they are just taking longer.

All the seeds I bought from some lady in china failed. Nothing from that batch sprouted. Luckily, I had a backup plan (buy from an american supplier on ebay).

From the ebay supplier I got 48/100 chinese elm seeds to sprout. And that's after I accidentally dropped/smooshed a few. Woohoo! Now I have those, plus a bunch (25?) JM seedlings, plus 200 double canterbury bell blue flower seeds that are all coming alive. Going to be an exciting spring! Pictures to follow soon.

Not a good idea to buy seeds overseas I think. I'm sure that the locals can suggest reliable suppliers in the US.

For instance in Europe, one of the best suppliers is "Semences du Puy" which is based in France but ships to neighbouring countries, like a supplier in Oregon would ship to Florida.

All the seeds I got from them germinated, Sequoiadendron giganteum, Sequoia sempervirens, Pinus thunbergii (almost 90%), Acer buergerianum (Over 90%), Malus micromalus, etc.

If you don't know the seller one way or another (forums, personal links), ordering from abroad is very risky.

PS: Perhaps there could be a sub-forum, or a pinned thread about "suppliers" where people could share their own experience... (?) With a five-star "appreciation" system and civilized comments of course.

Silver Hill Seed in Africa is great.
Sheffield, Schumacher, and Hill in America are good.

I rolled the dice this winter and bought 1lb of Japanese White Pine seed from China. They are in fact, pine seed, but no telling what will pop up. But for $40 including shipping, enjoyment to cost ratio will be fine.

There are a few seed swap sites I've tried, but I prefer to work with seed wholesalers who store their seed properly vs. swap sites or packs of 50 seed somebody has owned for who knows how long and is selling like a street dealer on eBay.

I ordered stuff from china aliexpress last year

So far
Pine: germinated a few 3/10 30%
Japanese maple: germinated a few last year 6/10 60%
Albizia julbrisin: germinated 9/10 90%
Wysteria : germinated 10/10 ratio 100%
Redwood dawn: 0/50 0% trying again now
Metasequoi: 0/30 0%

@defra I have had incredibly low germination rates with dawn redwood. At this point I have easily sown 300 of them, and have just a few trees to show for it. Cold stratification does seem to up the rate. I know there is debate around the web, but it's just my experience
