Bay Island Bonsai Show 2018

I thought it was a cherry, thanks for that. That's the best kind of wine, the kind you can't remember the next day!

I was drinking cognac too?. @markyscott went looking for shiners but came up empty. I think he settled for a local IPA

Don’t tell any of my Texas buddies that I was drinking a snooty California beer!!! That was supposed to be a secret!

Trees next door and for sale looked so much more impressive. Most on display would have impressed much when new to bonsai. Today, meh! Most only monument to how slavishly some can follow rules and make cookie cutter "Bonsai" with best part being trunks. Some few actually looked like real or wild trees instead of "Bonsai". Good photogs and many thanks for trees next door;).

It was great to meet you @Dav4, thank you for posting this pics from the show and garden, wishing you safe travels back home!

The feeling is mutual! It was great meeting you, @yenling83 , and congratulations on your wonderful Sierra juniper being selected to be shown at the National Bonsai Exhibit this coming September. It truly is one of the best collected Junipers I've had the pleasure of viewing in person.

I re-potted my JBP pick ups from the BIB show at the Redneck Bonsai study group with Boon this past weekend up at @Adair M 's. It was a great time, I had loads of fun and learned lots, and look forward to improving these over the next few years.

The trunk on that middle one is screaming!

Well, 4 years have gone since I started this thread... and re-potted the shohin pines  . I got to two of them this morning and all I can say is that I need to find better training pots for them..........
well, they also both suffered some minor damage during the move- hence the dried out foliage- and they need a hard cutback and wire this year.... but the new pots for sure!

The other one with the real junk in the trunk. This one hasn’t been as vigorous last few years and I suspect the roots may have contributed. I did a pretty aggressive soil change out and hope to see increased strength this season. I’ve got a 1 year old graft destined to build the apex… if it grows well this spring, I’ll remove the sacrificial branch. Also, that Bigei pot is beginning to build some patina after only 4 years😎.

Well, I'd say the re-pot was helpful as far as vigor goes. The tree was strong enough that it was partially defoliated and I finally was able to cut back the apical sacrifice branch.

The others continue to do well. In fact, despite de-candling the last week of June, the 2nd flush was uber strong with long candles/necks. They still need to be cleaned up and wired this winter.

My loot from the show. A stone from Jerry Braswell, a nice shohin jbp from Jonas Dupuich, and 2 shohin jbp purchased for a song at the auction. Adair and I did a little cleanup on them back at Boon’s. I also snagged a sweet sumo olive from Boon?.

This one would have preferred to have stayed in GA or CA, but it’s still alive and growing. Time for a repot!
