Do you come to a discussion forum for the truth or an attaboy?

Nope, though they were sad to see me go if that helps. I have to move on...something to do with REAL life. :)

You kind of remind me of an orchestra of bag pipes. You make a shrill noise and are full of hot air. You are obviously very bright but you don't take time to listen or learn.

I listen & learn more than you know (lots from you actually)...but you may never see it. Not because it is not happening but because you refuse to :)

Bag pipes, Hot air balloon, etc. They are full of hot air but serves their purpose. That too some people fail to see.

Please tell me frankly & honestly...when you read any of my post. Do you stop and see if any of it has merit? Or you just jump and try your best to dispute it? Lots of people here believe that if Dario said it, it must be wrong. :) I don't mind the personal attacks really but some are so bent in proving me wrong they go to the extent of mis-information (which is sad). No one dare to side with Dario (except a handful)--never mind what is right.

Also, if someone attacks Dario, they must "like" that post. It is really funny.

One word comes to mind: omnipresent.

Initially I came to this forum to learn. There were times when I had some wisdom I could share, which I enjoyed doing. But it seems inevitably, we run across those who just don't seem to see eye to eye.
gail Blanke in her book, throw out 50 things, outlines four rules of disengagement which states...if it...weighs you down, clogs you up, or just plain makes you feel bad about yourself, throw it out, give it away, sell it, let it go...move on.

Think we've reached that stage.

Hell, as bad as it pains me to admit this, I specifically logged on this morning to enjoy some internet arguments. I'll go back to enjoying this popcorn now.

And so we see the mind set involved in the invention of the Square Wheel. The undying belief that everything you do, or think, or suggest is absolutely right just because it was your idea. Hell; with the idea that you have absolutely no proof of anything you say it is only necessary that you say it because if you say it------it must be true.

You still work for the same construction company?

Thanks for the life lesson.......both of you are right, but not 100% of the time ;)

That's nice; assuming you know what you are talking about. I guess most of my problems are with people who claim all of this knowledge and are quick at telling people what to do, how to do it, and when to do it but have never posted a single photo of an example of their own work.

I see, and I see a lot; otherwise you would be getting the fraud and troll treatment.

I agree with this. I come here for advice from people who can prove they know what they are doing, who post examples of the trees they have and if I'm lucky enough a progression of how they have changed it over the years to get from A to B. They don't have to claim they have the knowledge, their trees do the talking for them and I think that is the way it should be.

Ergo...newbies shouldn't talk...just listen. Since I refuse to follow that train of thought, you can just ignore me (and the likes of me). ;)

BTW, that is how kids are raised in most 3rd world countries...not a very good model.

I didn't say that, but it would certainly benefit you to quiet down some. You are the first to post in every thread and then you post and post and post and post. And then after that you post some more, giving out advice in every thread on things you have not done or even seen done and only read about. It's a joke that anybody would take you seriously or actually follow what you suggest.

You come off as a know it all and try to challenge people who have actual results. You have a yard full of stumps. Thats not to say they can't be something someday. I hope they do. But until then sit on the bench and let the starting lineup do their thing.

Hung out with many 3rd world families have you? I have and I have a huge amount of respect for the children and the way they are raised. The degree of self responsibility shown by young children and the trust they are given can be quite the eye opener. Many N.A. Kids by comparison, well you'd think they were invalids or something by the way they are treated. Not all of course, amazing kids and parents here too.

As far as the horticultural stuff, keep it up I enjoy thinking about different points of view, I am happy to be responsible for the consequences of following whatever advice I chose to believe.

I came from one. Well my fellow Filipinos would rather call us "developing nation".

Seen it and how kids get "broken". Not all of course and balance is good. My dad is a good man but a "draconian" ruler. Out of 12 kids (cheaper by the dozen-I am #6), I am the first and only one to point out when he is wrong. I got beaten harshly for it at times (yeah we are very physical)...but never regretted it. In the end, he told me he respected me most for it. Coming from him...it meant a lot. Not lip service either, after high school, anytime he needed an opinion (as well as all my siblings) they ask for mine.

Eh, can't argue with that for experience then eh:)?

Exposure to different cultures, most of mine has been mountain 3rd world places.

Man, you hit the nail on the head with this analysis. It's not a race to get the first response to a thread, and it's not "whoever has the most posts at the end wins." Even the people who've been doing this for decades and have the experience don't feel the need to weigh in on every topic. Dario, you'd help your credibility a lot if you were more selective.

In most areas then (not sure now)...kids are trained to stay on the shadows not a peep, one glaring look and you will see them tremble. I feel really sorry for them just waiting to be told what to do. I refuse to be treated that way...not then, not now.

I don't feel I need to to slow down just to please some people. I go at my own phase...post when I feel like. Maybe one day I will just drop it all together and you guys can have a party. :)

Until then, please feel free to put me in your ignore list.

It's not a matter of pleasing people, it's a matter of whether you want to be taken seriously.

I don't need to put you in my ignore list, as I know from experience what I should take from your posts. My concern is the newcomer who sees 4000+ posts and assumes you've been doing this for 20 years and have experience to back up all your claims. But that doesn't seem to concern you.

The point is, when picking material for any purpose in bonsai its all about the choice rather than the price. A person does not have to spend great gobs of money to have a nice bonsai. All it takes is some time, a good eye, and passing the crap by and picking out that which will serve your purpose.

Here is the rub, I still see many here weekly here BUYING things with no actual plan in mind for that which they purchased. I don't care what anyone says that is just plain silly. If you have no clue what you are going to do the minute you go home from the store, then maybe you should pass that one by. A person should not be just buying willy nilly. There is more that enough good information here on how to choose a piece of material that will make a good bonsai.

I dont disagree with those sentiments Smoke. As youve seen, alot of new people get so excited to do bonsai, they do tend to buy just about anything and most of it is crap. I did the same thing the first year and a half when I started and I was trying to learn.

Ive seen and learned differently since then and I am a lot more selective now. I do understand your "frustration" with some of the things posted. Ive sat here and face-palmed myself when Ive seen some of the things that people have bought. The problem is that, for most of us, it takes time to figure out what is good and what isnt and why.

Yes there is a lot of info here about good and bad material. The thing is most people see a tree and say "hey it would be cool to do that" or they get a mallsai as a gift or impulse buy. They get it home and say "ok now what do I do with it" and they go to the internet to find some information. They come across this site, make and account and start asking about it, not the other way around. It would be nice if people researched the topic first, but it just doesnt happen most of the time. Unfortunately there isnt much we can do about that.

A experienced person such as yourself can absolutely see a tree and have an idea about what to do with it right away. This skill also takes time to develop and most new people (about less than 5 years into the hobby) cant do that yet simply because they havent put enough time in. Im getting better at it myself.

That is a very nice little elm and a great deal for a free tree. I have yet to find good free material. I used to go to different nurseries about once a week and so far its been very hard to find good "cheap" material for me so that might be where I get that bias from.
