The Discussion Forum v. Blogs

I dont mind all the advertising...if it makes them happy it is OK by me...I think I benefit more from FB than they benefit from me.
I use it as back up for all my pictures and for getting in touch with people with common interests...so if they want to market things to me...it is all right! They dont force me to buy anything.

The irony of everyone getting upset over a website such
as Face Book, sharing your info with everyone, is rather
funny... especially seeing that the sole purpose to it,
is to share your info with everyone ???

You guys are a Hoot !!! See the real problem with folks
now days is that they have become all paranoid about
being spied on, oh and the "Government Spying on You",
That you don't even realize that every bit of information
anyone needs about you is already out there, and has been
out there for a very long time !!!

One can easily find out, things like where you live, where
were you born, what is your date of birth, what your
age is, height, weight, sex, are you married, what is your
legal status, are you a US citizen, if you have ever been arrested,
what for, any warrants, traffic violations, who you are insured
by, have they made any claims, any law suits you have filed,
and law suits filed against you , what was the verdict, did you
have to pay, or did you receive money, do you owe child support,
have you paid your child support, do you own a home, how much
do you owe, do you own a car, multiple cars, truck, bike, trailer, etc.
and how much do you owe, who do you owe money too. Who holds
the notes on your house and car, how much do you pay a year in taxes
on these items... Man, one can even tell you the layout of the inside
of your house, the square footage, how many rooms you have, where
your property stops, and your fence line, any additions, if they were
reported, when they were made, if not, what kind of outstanding
violations you have on your house... Your family members houses,
your wife or husband's family members houses... and the list goes
on and on and on...

The reason being, is that every single one of these items and a million
more are all deemed "public record"... and each and everyone
here volunteers all this information regularly, some daily just by
participating in the system. So, fret not my fellow worry warts...
Face Book is the least of your problems, most here freely give out
their information anyways, without even knowing, and one can learn
more about you off of Face Book than on !!!

Oh, of course this is all unless you are rich !!!
Then you have special privileges where your info can be redacted
from public record, because some folks think you shouldn't have
to face the same burden as the rest of us, cause you have worked
hard to get where you are and the rest of us poor folk are just lazy !!!

Just because the information can be found, doesnt mean I have to make it easy for them.

If you enjoy getting spammed with advertisements all day and emails every day from FB to log in and do this, look at that when all you want to do is share some stuff with your friends, have at it. I prefer not.

I like to read blogs of my choosing for information, but don't find the interaction there that I find here and other forums provide. I can't post my trees on Al's forum for critique, so it's not as useful to me as a forum, in the conceived ways that forums functioned. I would welcome a way to separate serious discussion from other"chat" as 14er talked of... Sorry I'm coming late to the discussion, but been backpacking for a week in Colorado!

I don't think there is much difference, personally.

You could create a blog, but it would seem pretty empty without followers - because then why create the blog in the first place? So then you have followers. But are you just interested in followers without comments? So then you open up comments...

...and then you have a forum site :)

Seriously it is one of the reasons why I maintain a very "open" policy for posting links to blogs, etc, on this site. Different strokes for different folks. The majority of our users are not comfortable with posting, but come here for the content. There are some content creators that want to share their content, but don't like the possible anguish that comes from people critiquing their work. If they want to link their content to bonsainut, I'm all for it.

Not quite sure what you and perhaps the others are doing, but I do not
get advertisements and emails from FB. In fact it works so well that I
have been using my Facebook Page for work and as a blog for years !!!
Posting up what I have done on trees, and my paintings... Most of my
"friends" are clients, and people from all over the world, who somehow
manage to see my art and trees and want to be my friend, I am selling
a lot of work right off of it. At the end of this year, I actually plan on
getting rid of my e-commerce web site, that I am paying for... and sell
nothing on. Just waiting for the contract to run out.

I also love the instant message on FB, I communicate instantly with clients,
do all my business over it. If it wasn't for that, PayPal, and the Post Office,
I would be out of business.

I have a blog just to show my work and it's fun documenting it like that.
Mostly I set comments off because it's not a place for discussions that's were the forum comes in.
And the good thing is that only people who really enjoy it will watch it and follow you eventually.

Forums are really nice too if you want almost instant feedback or information.
I agree on the drama part being less attractive, but that's also a thing that comes with discussions for some.
I started out using forums and it really helped me out a lot.

Facebook I don't like. Most people only show pictures of people having or doing nice things otherwise they won't get any likes.
And i'm guilty too hahaha.
But as for posting trees it's almost always nice images of them and almost never trees in the beginning stages or in development. Because of the reason mentioned above.

I think there is no blog vs forums it's 2 totally different sorts of media.
And both very useful sources of information.

I really enjoy this forum and I thank you for the time you have put into it and I appreciate the fact that it is mostly uncensored. I prefer the forum to a blog or facebook page as it seems more organized and it is easier in my opinion to track threads about a tree or specific topic here.

I do enjoy blogs though and even started one myself. I only use my own as a different way to track my work and I feel more comfortable with my writing style and picture preferences there. I like to follow others who are well established and well versed in bonsai just to keep new content coming in. I follow bonsai here, FB, blogs, etc. The more the merrier!

I don't understand the hoopla about Facebook to be honest. Don't want people looking you up? Block people from searching you. Or just use an alternate name, nickname, or initialize your name. Don't want people looking at your photos? Make them private. Don't want people looking at your profile period? Make it private. It's not rocket science. You can privatize just about every little bit of info that you place onto the site.

Advertisements? What advertisements? I'm on my personal page right now as I type this, and I don't see a single one. Granted, I use Ad Block Plus w/Firefox, but things like that can be easily ignored anyways. (BTW, Ad Block Plus is a free add-on for Firefox. It keeps those pesky commercials from popping up on Youtube videos when you press the play button.)

FB has been a Godsend to me. It allows me to keep in touch with family, friends, and reconnect with long lost people I haven't seen in years.
