Field Maple. Acer Campestre. It’s Been Lifted Now

ooks happy.

Have you considered removing the branch on the left in the top, on the front/inside of the trunk curve?
It feels a bit off in location and character tbh

Do you mean this branch section shown with the arrow? I'd consider the prune. I would hesitate to remove it entirely though. Total branch removal would create a large hole/gap in the top. I will attempt a plain background and then photo erase that branch (if that's the one you meant in your reply). The photo revision will tell me more about the hole i create. Something for me to consider. I'm looking for an overall pleasing tree image to me as i rotate the tree around. When fully leafed the tree may well balance better with that imperfection left in place. Thanks for the input idea.

@leatherback Here's a closer view of that branch. You can see that a lot of leaves would be eliminated and the hoke that removal would likely create. Before the thought….I have not had success ever with thread grafting. I simply end up with holes to fill in after the failure.

I understand what you say. On the other hand, you have 4 branches on that trunk section. The one in the inner curve disturbs the flow of the trunkline, and it would be much better to grow a branch out a little lower, I cannot tell whether that is a massive scar or just rough bark. A happy well-fertilized fieldmaple throws buds everywhere all the time so it should be easy to get a branch within an inch of your ideallocation.

@leatherback That area below the branch is just about entirely a rolled over scar from the first trunk chop long ago. I circled the scare area in blue in this photo. No new buds will grow out of that area and have not for many years. I understand what you saying though. I need to examine the tree more and explore branch options.

yup, thats what it looked like.

Is there another chop in the back, just above the discussed branch? If that has not healed over, one route COULD be to use the discussed branch as a new leader. But.. All very hard to grasp when just looking at a bunch of pictures. 3D is King Queen and Servant in these discussions.

Not a lot of help really…..but here are views from four different sides taken when the leaves were just removed.
