Mame contest idea

Rosemary is cool...though @ABCarve stated they don't like root work. You can lose branches by removing roots. Keep that in mind when putting into a mame pot. He lost a good section of his tree after a a repot. Which was way larger than a mame pot. Food for thought...but hey, doesn't mean you can't do one...for the contest or just for fun on the bench outside the contest. Look up his archived threads on Rosemary. You will glean a lot of valuable knowledge there.

I've got 3 rosemary currently already....in various stages. Few cuttings that have rooted as well. This is true about the branch lose. My plan though if I enter one is to get a nice one this weekend, cut down the roots to mame pot size and then let it be for the next 3 years, so that I don't risk losing key branches. Then I would slip pot it into the final pot.

They grow well and fast here. So in 3 years I think I will have options with it...hopefully lol

Getting a nice one and cutting it down...no worries on losing the main structure of the tree? Or planning on keeping deadwood a feature? I would have thought using the cuttings the key...new roots to train into a tiny pot. But again...no knowledge of Rosemary at repotting time. I killed mine by placing in the cold greenhouse when temps raised and I felt the basement window location to warm...then forgot...to move back when real winter hit. Though I know one who has a huge pot if Rosemary. Going to ask her what her trick is... maybe I over thunk it to much...and should have left it in that window. Do I really need another tree? Lol no...really wanting to not buy trees currently. Just take what I have to the next level.

Wishing you the best of luck!

Thanks! you also! I love deadwood and would definitely keep the feature if it fit the tree. But no I'm not worried about losing the structure to be honest. I've good experience with them though....

Taking nursery stock I cut half or more of the root mass off and haven't had any problems losing branches. Though they are super prone to spider mites and powdery mildew here..least for me

The climate here is different though and as you know they behave differently here (trees...and people for that matter lmao!)

So with one day left for entries I was under my bench and found buds popping on this Siberian elm branch I cut off about a month ago and threw in a pot. By far the largest cutting ive ever had take. I guess I know what to do with it now. Here is my 3rd entry.View attachment 157480
Now that's playing all out.
Aren't siberian elms one of the toughest plants ever?
I have a couple.
Dozen!

Yessir. I should have a couple dozen by the end of summer too. Everytime I pruned this summer I stuck the whips in the ground and literally walked away and they rooted almost instantly. Even that 2 inch branch!!!

Not kidding, this is no more than 2 years growth.
Started as one of those little herb punnets you buy for the kitchen at the supermarket. The litre coke bottle for scale.

It was even trampled by builders at one point.

Wow those are yugggggeee!!!

Cuttings root so easily on these too lots of fun!

Noticed my first team Willow Leaf has scale bad after hail storm yesterday knocked half the leaves off. sheeze...

So after 2 places I picked out 3 trees to work today and choose my 3rd and final entry.

Been raining all day....searched in the rain but

bonsai artist never say die!!

Anyway,

Going to be between:

Boxwood, Rosemary, or Ilex :

Already working through the rosemary.

Now, I'm going to work these as the trees tell me they want to be. So this is why I picked 3. If I feel bringing any of these too small is going to waste a good tree then it's off the list.

Here is the rosemary so far:

Am I cool to enter my lazy one by midnight?

Nice!
I found two of three so far :D

I had 2 of mine picked out but then the coprosma died so I'm not sure if it will suit the others. The ficus cutting is already in a pot but it is a bit plain, really not sure if a blue cup will suit that either.
This is all ok as it means I get to look for more pots. :D

Easy on rosemary, if I may suggest. Very touchy!

Thank you and I appreciate you looking out. I hear this from a a few people but, I haven't had issues with them being touchy though.

Maybe it's the climate here????:confused:

Or my smooth touch??? :cool::p

The pic above was before I was done pruning it. I took about half of what is the pic above off. I also cut off half the roots. I do this quite regularly with them and they do wonderfully. Just yesterday I cut back 80 percent of another one.

They grow roots here in mid air from the branches. Cuttings are so easy LOLOL

The only issues I have with them here is they are prone to powdery mildew and spider mites..............

I'm going to cut it back a lot more, but not this year...........next year in spring. Not fully sure of the direction yet so I left some branches that I will end up removing in the future.

Here it is today:

My first team looks bad... Had a hail storm knocking off nearly every leaf only to encounter my first bad case of scale. Cleaned em off one by one and treated w/Seven. We'll see if it pulls through but not feeling too confident.

Put the serissa in a oversized shallow pot in hopes of good root spread to develop. It's looking happy and growing well so far.

The crazy Virginia Creeper is going wild. I can grow weeds well apparently...IMG_20170830_101606406_HDR.jpg
All good fun.
