Oh! This control group got 2–3 tbsp each of Portland Rose Society’s granular organic fertilizer. It’s 5-4-4.

Nicely done!!

I should be lifting the seedlings, pot bound around April.
To put into a wider, but not deeper pot.

Down here the J.B.pine roots surfsce, naturally
and with tooth pocks can be shifted - if need be.
Good Day
Anthony

Nearly all of my seedlings are starting candle extension growth. I’ve performed bud selection on some of them, reducing to two, and will soon continue repotting.

Today I transplanted 12 seedlings into more of the colanders. For these, I trimmed the tap root and spread the roots out flat and radiating from the trunk.

I’ve started marking the rims of colanders with oil pencils: white for control and yellow for trimmed tap roots. More to come…

They’re growing quite well and about true to form for my climate. This new yard has excellent light and I’m not seeing issues with disease. Candle extensions are at about 18" and I’m not planning any foliage pruning this year (other than bud selection). I’ll be doing wiring in the late summer.

All of these seedlings have had monthly fertilization from a granular organic, one treatment of iron granules and crushed oyster shell, and one spray of Thiomyl systemic fungicide (3336).

On this group I trimmed the tap root, plus made other small cosmetic improvements to the roots

(An Anderson Flat of JBP 4" plugs is visible at the rear left)

This group was transplanted last year straight from the seeding tray to these 4" pots

In total I lost about 12–16 seedlings over the winter and I’m quite confident it was environmental stress from being too wet. I did not see signs of disease.

(For reference, June 1–15 is when we typically find the most success for candle pruning in the Portland area)

About half of the JBP saplings are now pushing their second candle extension of this season.

These are progressing at a pretty decent rate and the growth looks nice and healthy. I'm looking forward to Spring kicking in down here in a couple of months, I'll be happy if I can get growth like yours next growing season ... great work. 👍

I’m wiring up some of the saplings
EDE6BD25-01AE-4369-808C-F7D83464915E.jpeg

This was one of my larger spring transplants, it’s 7/16" diameter by caliper measure

I suspect I have some slightly larger, but nothing more than 5/8" diameter.

Some of the saplings are also getting a transplant from 4" pots to colanders

Are they on steroids?
No. He's just lucky to be in a better climate! In our climate we can't compete with these results I'm afraid. We should start a 12 year japanese black pine from seed competition. .....
Really I'm jealous of results I see in this forum!
Still having fun though! Keep up the good work!

Well done! You are right on track for a 3 inch trunk at the end of the six year mark. Only one of my trees surpassed 3 inch diameter in a six year span. Out of a group of 240 to start.
The key i believe is choosing the next container to allow for unrestrained growth in the final three years without repotting! Coupled with the super fertiliser, extra water regime in a free draining media. All of my trees were becoming pretty congested in the grow boxes at the six year mark. Root compaction due to size limitations. I transfer to anderson flats if i wish to continue to grow out at this point.
The grow box size i prefer is 11 inch by 11 inch by 5 1/2 inch deep ( inside measurements.)

Just full sun and regular water in an airy, screened akadama-pumice-lava-diatomaceous earth soil :)

Supplements include:
5-4-4 granular organic fertilizer with mycorrhizal inoculants
Oyster shell
Iron sulfate
Chlorothalonil (Daconil)
Copper fungicide

Plus a touch of Malathion

It’s still too cold overnight to do any repotting or wiring. These seedlings are all just chillin on the ground in the back yard.
