Good example of what’s possible with some future vision and applying the correct techniques.
My very first Japanese maple was purchased in February 2020. I was 7 months into my bonsai journey and didn’t know much.
Fast forward 5 years and I have 2 decent shohin projects from the original tree.

Giant trunk Hibiscus shohin present

That tree's trunk looks like my high school PE teacher. He was a grumpy old fat guy with bumps.

Took the day off work to dig some trees from my grow bed.
4 Chinese quince, 3 years old from seed. These have been in the grow bed for 2 seasons. 5 more to dig up tomorrow.
The intentionally twisted the roots of some of them into funky shapes when I put them in the ground. I’ve also been wiring the new growth while in the ground, which is a very difficult process but has yielded some decent results.
