    Redwood Progression

Ryan Nichols is the young man that you are thinking of. He is a good resource for growing and caring for redwoods in Southern Calif. Going with a deeper pot in your area would be a good idea. I use straight Akadama when planting redwoods and keeping them hydrated and out of the wind are the...

    Redwood Progression

Nice initial styling. You can always remove branches later. I think sometimes folks want to carve and improve on what nature has created over many years and do a disservice to the tree. Other than clean up to the deadwood, I think that it should be left alone. Kevin Wilson's work on one of...

    Recent visit with Ryan Neil

Our study group met with him this past June, and he explained that he is canceling his study groups and traveling. He has no one to care for the trees at the nursery and feels that they haven't gotten the proper attention while he was gone. Being married and having a baby due in Nov are also...

    Sierra juniper, "Bar None"

Thanks for the comments. I have a pretty nice group of about a dozen sierras that I have kept and have been working on with Ryan Neil the past 3 years. He will be out in June, and we will work on refining the pads. I'll post some pictures then.

    Sierra juniper, "Bar None"

Its never hard to go collecting, even after finding a great piece like this. Its hard to describe, but once you've been bit by the collecting bug, Its hard to imagine not going. Just being and hiking in the sierra nevadas is a special experience. Plus I still come home with really good material.

    Sierra juniper, "Bar None"

Thanks Chris - Actually I'm an old pro at this. I mentioned in a prior post that I had my other hip and a knee replaced, shoulder rotator cuff surgery and carpol tunnel surgery in both hands all in the last 5 years and have yet to miss a collecting season. My knee and hip doctor is supportive...

    Sierra juniper, "Bar None"

Cory - Thanks for the message. The recovery is going well, and I look forward to getting back to collecting in the near future. Art - Ryan has seen the tree several times now and is quite familiar with it. When it comes time to work on it, it will be with Ryan for sure.

    Sierra juniper, "Bar None"

Cory - I had hip replacement surgery 3 weeks ago and the tree is in a half barrel. I don't think that I'll be moving it for awhile and probably won't make the REBS meeting next week. Dario - My plan is not to do anything with the dead wood, other than to clean it up a bit. I don't think...

    Sierra juniper, "Bar None"

I colllected this sierra juniper about a year and a half ago. It was growing on the side of a mountain with no other trees around it. After digging it, I radioed my collecting partner and said, "I just collected the best sierra juniper, bar none." The name stuck, and we call it Bar None. The...

    New Sequoia Redwood

It will not survive a winter in the ground in your area. Even the older collected material that we ship to Denver and other parts of the country are wintered in green houses. If you have temps in the low 20s for extended period of time, they need to go in a greenhouse or indoors and the...

Sierra Juniper for American Bonsai Show in Sacramento

If you saw the tree in person, I think you might see why the front we chose was a no brainer.

Sierra Juniper for American Bonsai Show in Sacramento

Thanks Rob and Dan. I think that we are blessed here in Calif with the weather, as well as accessibility to a wide range of material and instructors. I do get a great deal of satisfaction hiking in the sierra and finding and collecting great material. I'm going to be 69 in June and have had...

Working on Grafted Calif Juniper with Ryan Neil

I figure that it is a "win, win" for me. Working with Ryan has resulted in some great trees or future great trees, plus I learn alot in the process. I agree with Paul in the amount that I have learned in the last 2 plus years working with Ryan. You can rest assured Vance that I haven't...

Working on Grafted Calif Juniper with Ryan Neil

Thanks, I do think that it will be a great tree in the future. I don't quite understand why Ryan's name, at times, draws a negative reaction. I'm convinced those who do have never met him. Besides being really talented, he is a nice, friendly, easy person to be around. Since returning from...

Working on Grafted Calif Juniper with Ryan Neil

The vein will not need to be worked on. It will "pump up" as the foliage mass increases. I'll post pictures of work and development in the future.

Working on Grafted Calif Juniper with Ryan Neil

Gosh Vance, I went back and reread all of the posts, and unless I missed it, no one assigned "greatness" to this tree. Ryan and I will work on the tree together in the future, I hope that is o.k. with you. Fore - The live vain was not smoothed out before wrapping with rafia nor was the dead...
