What about hemlock? The MI native eastern hemlock would look good in a mixed forest planting, where its smooth bark would not be as noticed.
I would think witch hazel, alder, & hazelnut (filbert) all would have leaves that don't reduce enough to put in the same pot as larch and spruce. I would think they would have to be kept separate for reasons of scale.
Hemlock, larch & spruce all have needles in the same size range.
American Red Pine, Pinus resinosa. nice Michigan native, it is closely related to JBP and Austrian black pine P. nigra, I have never seen a collectable one with a fat trunk, but just like we train JBP seedlings into pre-bonsai, then bonsai, has anyone worked with P. resinosa? It would be super cold tolerant, in fact might not do well in zone 7 and warmer. It would be a single flush pine like P. sylvestris and P. nigra, I love the bark on a mature tree. Needles are long, they do not tolerate shade at all. But otherwise seen a good pine.
