I ended up mixing up two bags of dry stall pumice, one bag of turface, and a few bricks of expanded coconut husk chunks to pot everything up.

Thanks! I'm making a lot of cuttings too, so I'll just treat that weird piece like another cutting . . . what I'll actually DO with it, I have no idea :)
