I've seen a few trees with proper names pop up every so often I know Nick Lenz puts a name on all or most of his. Does anyone here name their trees? And if so has anyone used Burt? I have an American elm that would be a Burt for sure.
Just kidding. He told me his real name is Francis.

This is Mavis, named after my Mother in law. It was dug from her front yard years ago.

I have one tree I've named, but only because it is so obvious. It would make it easier to refer to them by name, but who is going to step into my back yard and know them by name anyway, then I would have to go through an explanation that would take longer than simply pointing. You'd think you could go with the actual name of the plant, but people can't seem to see a Spruce tree in a pot. If was in the ground they wouldn't have a problem!!!

I never forget a face, but names elude me. Maybe that's why I haven't done it much.

I could name them like my kids name their stuffed animals... Blackie:the black bear, Brownie: the grizzly bear, Whitey: the polar bear. I guess they would have named all my trees Greenie, except the dead ones...Mulchy!!

I've never felt the urge to name any of my trees. I do name my koi :) I have a Hi asagi named grace and a narumi asagi named Abbie.

And i appreciate names used in asia for trees and stones. In fact I have started names for some of my suiseki. I have a hut stone with a white roof that I refer to as Winter home...

Forgot about Mavis. Seen the thread on her before. Very nice.
Keep them coming!
I would probably name a fish. Fillet would be good for starters. Especially when it was a bad fish. Or would that make it good?

I was trying to convince my nieces to name their new kittens "Eagle Food." They weren't as amused as I was.

There are nicknames and there "Names".

Really "Naming" a tree is a high honor, and it is reserved for a few select trees during one's lifetime. Think John Naka's "Goshin".

Anyone can give a nickname to their tree. That's ok.

As an example, Boon has given formal names to only two trees in his life. But lots of his trees have nicknames.

Some of my trees have adjectives, but none are really named. For example, several trees I've worked on in workshops, in order below have the artist as the adjective:
Ben Oki azalea
Kathy Shaner shimpaku
Peter Warren black pine
RMJ I collected near a burned out area, I refer to as the fire juniper (right one).
A close friend and fellow DMB fan visited and named my hawthorn "The Dreaming Tree". Among my favorite DMB songs, though I don't know if the name will stick.

Many of my trees have referential names based on where I got them such as "the Mas pine", "Gareth oak", "Lynn's Scot pine" or based on special features of the tree like "Elephant juniper", "hollow redwood".
Only one of mine has an actual name. That would be "Fat Ollie":

Oh yea, I do it and have a bonsai buddy who does it too. Some of my tree's nicknames usually come from either where I got them, or a special feature. Big ben, Buddha, 1G, Benny Kim, Brussels, Gerald Young, etc...I think it's fun. Now for formal names, I haven't done that yet lol

All of mine came with names and if they did not I find out what they are... :p Kathy Shaner has a neat way of naming trees though and I am kind of surprised Vic has not "piped" in with some of those.

The white cedar that is my avatar has been named Lucinda for as long as I can remember--about thirty years--why, I can't really remember. Almost all my trees have some sort of name either ones I or my wife gave or inherited (Boner tree, ejac-u-man, Lacy, Big Rock, China-tree, Upity Cedar) Most are named in connection with their collection, or maybe their style, or my wife deems them so.

The only thing that happens when I go out to the trees is I have the song Calendar Girls. Only in my head it's collander girls.
I love I love I love my collander girls.
