Your "Last Tree of the Year" 2016 Thread

Ever get that nagging feeling that you are forgetting something?
Well I had that feeling when I typed my previous post.
When I walked out into the garage this morning I finally realized what I had been forgetting.

I bought this weird Trident maple at the same time I bought the ficus.
Sorry for the pic on the back of the truck instead of a plain background but it was 35 degrees and I didnt want to go to the hassle of setting it all up.

This looks like an entling. I like it. What are your plans? I see cutting everything off except for the left branch...

Not sure yet but that definitely is an option. I dont like the opposite branches up there either and its kinda bulbous looking so cut the top branches and the right branch and do something with the left and maybe hope for a bud on top for a new apex (?)

I'll have to take a picture of my last tree of 2016 once I take it out of it's winter hibernation. 50% of a 3'-4' nursery stock Hinoki Cypress with some very small leaf size (or whatever you call them on a Hinoki. The tree has a massive trunk as well, can't wait to work on it.

Why? The single branch on the left with the odd trunk will make a stellar tree on it's own. LMK if you want to get rid of this one...

Nope, I bought it because it is so unique and odd looking. I got it on December 3rd and honestly with putting the trees away for the winter and trying to get my pines plucked, pruned and wired, I havent had a chance to really study this one yet other than the obvious something needs to be done with the opposite branching.

Im also extremely tired right now so trying to visualize a tree is not something I can wrap my brain around.
I am open to and appreciate the suggestions and I agree it would probably be the best way to go with this tree.
I think I understand and can start to visualize what your getting at though.
Perhaps someone who has a few minutes and is bored would like to do a quick vert.

I'm not good at virts, but so easy, to put a towel over the right side of the tree and see what a jewel you have there. I will make a virt if you need one. I can see something special for this with just that one branch.

Ill play with it when I have a quiet few minutes and try to remember my own sketching skills I had so long ago.

It grabbed me too which is why it followed me home.
Looking at the picture again, I need to do something with the high root on the left as well at some point or at least examine that area of the trunk and see whats really going on there.

Funny, as soon as I saw Paradox's tree I pulled up an old photo of one of my developing maples and cropped it like this.
Just to see if there might be the same kind of possibilities someday you know.,,

Actually, I think it could be pretty cool little tree.

Here is my last purchase of 2016. In October I visited Andy Smith and bought this tree.

This is my first design of it. A nice round pot, will dress it up nicely in the spring. I'll see how healthy it seems first though. I might be able to simply slip it into a nice pot with minimal root work.

My last design work of the year was with this Scot pine gathered three years ago. This was your classic railroad gather with a broken top and branches growing randomly.

I always thought of this side as the front, but there is more deadwood to see on the other side.

So I made this the front. I'm not sure what I will do with the root that comes toward the viewer. Next time I repot it I will see how important it is to the tree.

I picked up these three Japanese Black Pine from the local landscape nursery. End of year special, all three for $40 total. A lot of work ahead of me especially because these are my first JPP. I will be looking for help in the near future.
