I was hoping you might have taken it down to the three.

Why not?

Ok, in summer 2014 I bought this little Ginkgo biloba in a 5# pot at a landscape nursery in Santa Barbara.

I cut back a few branches but left it long and lanky - I hadn't fully embraced the way of the chop yet ;)

After that I think I just left it to grow until the next summer.

Summer 2015 I chopped it to a low branch and wired up the new lead.

By spring 2016 it was time to start in on those awful roots!

I just took a saw to the original 5# pot and then raked what was left a little bit.

As @sorce alluded, if I don't get any buds in that long empty section, then I'll eventually cut it way down low . . . for now, I'm giving it a chance.

As I was sitting here thinking....

I'm giving it a chance.

To what?

Look ugly?
Excite some sick person?
Ruin your progress?
Piss me off?

I noticed that front higher branch.

Then how sickly and out of perfect that low front one is.

Please.
Cut the low front one....

Please.
Cut it down to the top front one.

Please don't sell it without PMn me!

That is, well, that could be, the dopest Ginkgo start I've seen.

Fingers crossed for no buds up there!

A couple more hard cuts, and an inexpensive Chinese glazed pot, and it's starting to look like a bonsai ;)

Nice progression and little ginkgo. Just a Q Colin, what style are you going for? Asking because I have got one in the ground and I would pay for those lowest branches you removed.:) But I need them for "flame" style.

Ithe appears I'm not the only one who uses glue to seal up wounds. Nice start!

Thanks. It's actually one of those gloopy cut pastes that comes in a toothpaste tube - I think our recent torrential rain may have washed most of it away!
Nice, I guess I'm still the only cheap one who uses wood glue:p it doesn't rain enough here to remove any type of cutpaste:rolleyes:

Even if I end up going more classic flame style, I'd like to see a bit of Trunk/Nebari at the bottom; that's why I ditched that lowest branch. Im not certain where we'll end up - perhaps somewhere naturalistic between broom and flame . . .
