I couldn't find any cat litter I liked the smell of o_O, so I took your advice and sifted the big pieces out of some turface, leaving a nice fine media:

@Bonsai Nut - thanks for the suggestion. I think you had the right idea, but were wrong about the flow; clearly the energy of the tree moves toward the left, making that the ideal place for the ni-ren.

I expect the grafts to take pretty quickly, so I want to start preparing to show the tree soon. This is the accent I had in mind.
