Sorry for a title, but it's how it is.

I'll start with my oldest Chinese elm. Mallsai... couldn't find a way to use this ugly trunk.


So went ahead and did this this spring.
Last week these were ready to be separated. I love manual works!



... checking roots and potting.


And this is what I'm starting again with...

PS: I have more adepts of the same origin, will continue.

These two duranta have similar story behind, growing them out now.


This one was 2m tall this spring, reduced in hight, repotted, growing ... Who knows how much of the tree is sacrifice growth?

Two great options for the infamous "s" style.

So I went ahead and did an A-L again, boring.


After separation few windows were cut along the part of the trunk that was going to be buried. I used concave cutters to do it. Then the trunk was laid down and potted.
At the end of 1st year I was able to select and wire some new trunks.


This, 2nd year was dedicated to let it grow wild.


This is a look under the hood. Half of the trunk is still under the soil.


Next spring for repotting, editing roots and trunk/branch selection again. Will continue growing out selected trunks. Maybe in 5-10 years I'll have something.
note:I know it's in an elm section, so I added the tags.

I still repeat the same mistake... putting trees that need some more development to too small pots, at least it saves room.

When you comment the " origin doesn't matter" i think about the joy of finding something in an unexpected place. I Particularly like the will to play bit. Continuing to look for options, try alternatives, be open to multiple approaches. Deep pockets can be helpful at times and some times over-rated. Generally it is appreciated when a unique opportunity presents itself.

Thank you too. Taking pictures indoors between two storms was really funny. Had some issues with light... at the end I noticed a CPL filter mounted on my lenses instead of clear, oh wifey. ?

Me too as well! Nursery, Yamadori, Garden, Home Depot, Ditch etc. It could also mean immigrant versus citizen where the only difference is often experience in that location. Along the lines of almost everyone came from someplace else at some point in time!

Cool! Thanks for posting this.Just the inspiration I was looking for.I always did like raft bonsai.
I have a bunch of Zelkova cuttings and at least a couple will be shaped for this and put in the ground.
I can get a 2” trunk in a couple seasons with Zelkova!
