I made a really quick stop at the PNW bonsai museum last week and snapped a few pics. Thought I would share them! I exactly ten minutes to see the exhibit so I might be wrong on some Tree names.
Hornbeam? Not sure on this one.

Love that white pine. Thanks for the post.

Fascinating for me to look back at these trees and see how far they’ve come!
Somewhere I have grainy digital pix from our visit there in around 2003 when it was the Weyerhaeuser Collection; my FIL lived in Gig Harbor. That Japanese Beech has to be one of the best in America.

It would be a shame if someone were working on a new innovative pot for it
Funny thing is, I have always dug that pot & pairing. I think my buddy in Iowa has the same pot with a 5-trunk nerifolia planted in it. Your work is amazing and it will be cool to see what’s next for the beech. It’s a very classic tree, deserving of a special pot.

Well, you may be disappointed to learn it has outgrown the old pot (it might have broken in half as I recall.) This is just a placeholder below, but the museum now wants to make a not-entirely-classic artistic statement with the new pot.

I would love to hear color suggestions! I can echo the original pot color or something.

I did like the blue-green color of the last pot. Blue may be boring, and green is such a hard match. A Cantonese celadon works with the bark year-round and really compliments the bronze leaves that hang on. From your gallery, I’d consider that celadon glaze over a bag-shape oval:

I also like your blue-gray glaze, unless it’s subdued enough that it’s too close to the trunk color. If it leans a little purple, that could be interesting.

Thanks BVF, I am noting your glaze suggestions. Agreed with blue and I will make a darker and lighter option. I generally give the Museum 2-3 options.

Bag is an interesting thought. If it was entirely my call I would do classic bags all day, but for this one they want me to innovate. I will consider options that innovate on the bag concept.

For a while in Japan there was a trend of pairing beeches with Ruri (ultra dark blue) glaze. The dark blue looks good vs bronze leaves or white trunk

I agree. Ikkou has a good Ruri glaze that pairs well, but it is very classic and very safe.
