Put Up Or Shut Up!

Mr. Andy,
This is a little off topic but I was wondering if you could share some info perhaps on another thread about working with scheffs. Have some that have lived in a greenhouse for quite some time and they seem to have some pretty bizarre habits as to where they'll die back to, aerial root formation, etc. Easy to grow but hard to convince them to grow the way you want them to.

It takes some courage to post trees that are not yet ready, in the owners mind, to be shown yet. Smoke, Bretts, Irene, Rick, Barry, Moley, Jay, and Andy have all "put up" some trees for the rest of us to look at, thank you.

Certainly there are more than 5 or 6 people here with trees? The topic is after all, "put up or shut up" and against my own personal wishes, I posted some of what I am working on just to play along.

There are a few participants in this thread who have posted words but not yet trees, Chris, Zelk, Boondock, ashbarns, bonsaiwes, and others.... come on guys, don't be afraid, the thread is for those we are working on, not those we think are suitable to show, everything is admissible, everything is what Irene asked for.

Having been called out, for better or for worse, in this game of silly justification, it is my turn to do the calling, so let's "put up or shut up". ;)

All in fun,

Will

(Disclaimer: It is my personal belief that one can buy a tree but one can't buy experience or talent at any price. Put up or shut up games often pit those who buy near finished trees against those who do not and though each method of acquiring trees is valid, each has differing results spread out over different time frames.

Purchasing near finished trees is a great short cut, but can often leave the experience gained by bringing stock to that level on ones own behind and forgotten. A person can buy a yard full of near finished stock and show them all they want, it is only when the skill at buying such trees is confused with the skill of creating such trees do problems arise.)

In the first picture in post #83, on the far right of the table is a pine that looks very nice, the trunk looks like it has great movement.....

Wil

yeah its a black pine that i earned by working a couple of days at a local bonsai nursery , here is another picture of it...

Nice flare at the base and I like the movement in the trunk, I imagine that in time, once potted lower and finer development is completed that this will be a very nice tree.

Yup, all in fun!
We all have our crapsai trees and we all have some that are near finished.
The goal is to show each other and the just starting out ones, that we are all in this together!
The Joy/Addiction of Bonsai is a loner game and if we can't reach out to each other to share, than as humans we have failed.
I thank each of you for showing your stuff!
Now I know what I just may want to experiment with at a later time!

Zelk/Chris,

You are doing soooo good with your stuff!
I love the Cactus!
Thank You for sharing!

Well, I'll post some crap to make you all feel a bit more comfortable. I keep them so I can make it through 7-8 months of winter. First is my only mallsai, it's a Liguster. Then a pomegranate I got as a gift.

Well, hmmm. I don't have a yard full of crap, but here is my least developed tree.

Oh, what the hell. I have already shown everything I have, but here's a closeup of a JBP that I bought in 2003. The first pic is in 2005, shortly after removing the bag around a graft toward the top of the tree (the tape is still in place). This is actually in a Japanese oval training pot, seen almost end-on for the trunk angle.

The second photo was last week before candling. The third is after candling the tree. It was showing new buds developing less than a week after the process.

This Chinese Elm was a true mallsai that I've had for about three years and became dissatisfied with. I have done two thread grafts and am remaking the apex.

The other is a Forsythia that was collected in the spring of 2006 and made it into a training pot this year.

I haven't seen anyone here post a yard full of crap at all, I have seen a lot of people post experience and knowledge in the making. If one could photograph the learning process, I am sure it would look remarkably similar to these pictures.

Irene asked for the undeveloped trees, the raw product, the trees in progress....I'm sure you must have a few more trees that are not developed fully that you could share with us, don't you?

Will,

Thanks, I'm not really sure where I'm going with this one. I suppose I'll have to saw off the long straight section as it has no taper and little movement. Perhaps something like how I have seen some tridents treated.

Norm

Ok,

Here is a 3 gallon foliage plant before I started training it a ways back. Then a pic from 2-3 weeks ago, after a bit more time maybe late July I can remove the oversized leaves and clean out the green stems and aerials from inside there. Pot is 18" long.

Okay, after taking these pictures I realized that I have A LOT of work to do! But, in the spirit of playing along I decided to show a few of my warts.

I didn't even mow.
